On Being a Law-Abiding Citizen

On Being a Law-Abiding Citizen

A Chapter by Aram Alexander

Written a while ago when I still lived in Dubai. As you may or may not notice, I f*****g hated the place.

I try, I really try to be a pretty decent person.
Towards family, friends and random strangers alike.
Offering polite and friendly greetings, being considerate, putting others before myself, opening the door for strangers, offering them whatever I am enjoying at that moment.
You know, all that outdated chivalrous gentleman stuff that sadly people seem to have forgotten.
But sometimes… Look, there are days that I just need to listen to the tempting voices telling me to be a vengeful b*****d and just let loose on all these (mostly local) arrogant elitist racist b******s.
F**k what I should do (eyes straight ahead and just keep walking.), now is the time for whatever the f**k I want to do. (sidekick to the kneecap, hammer-strike to the chest, elbow to the face.)

“But Mike, that would make you a law-breaking criminal!” *gasp!*
Oh yeah? Have you ever littered? Crossed the street without using an available zebra path/pedestrian crossing thingy? Used a hand-held electronic device while driving? Do you download music and movies or software from the internet without paying? How about having an unofficial internet-linked pirated entertainment system for your TV that has thousands of channels from all over the globe?
If yes, then YOU are a criminal too.
What, just because it’s not a severe infraction of the law or not quite tangible (stealing digital data as opposed to a gold wristwatch or a DVD or whatever) doesn't mean you’re not stealing or breaking the law. Sorry, ignorance is no longer a valid excuse.
Don’t get me wrong, I do most of these things and a few others which are also not in accordance with the law, but unlike most people, I don’t pretend otherwise.

I am among a large group of individuals that are all considered to be something of a rebel (and chances are that you are too) by a select demographic consisting mainly of arrogant mid-life-crisis-undergoing “stiff upper lip and a stick up the a*s” pencil-dicked paper-pushing government ball-sucking elitists in this part of the world. Why?
Simply because we choose not to obey each and every rule blindly; we much prefer to use our brains and common sense to determine right from wrong.

“But Mike, the government always knows what’s best for us!”
BULL. S**T. At least not here in Dubai.
You kill someone with your car, you get maximum four months’ jail time, perhaps a hefty fine, and after you serve some time you are free to return to Dubai’s roads. AFTER ENDING SOMEONE’S LIFE!
However, you smoke up in Amsterdam under 100% LEGAL circumstances, come back to Dubai three weeks later, get pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving, and at the police station a urine test reveals NO TRACE WHATSOEVER of alcohol, but a minuscule amount of THC left in your system from TWENTY-ONE days ago, and what do you get?
FOUR F*****G YEARS MINIMUM, a fine you’ll need to sell your house for, followed by unconditional deportation the moment you are released from jail. So let’s briefly compare: You smoke up under legal circumstances causing no harm to anyone or anything, you get four YEARS minimum.
You KILL someone with your car, and all you stand to lose is a mere four MONTHS at most.
Now tell me, do you still think that the government always knows best?

The reason behind why the laws in Dubai are the way they are is because the government here caters to two types of people: people with lots of money, and people with a local passport who happen to almost always fit in the first group in the first place.
So does it come as any surprise that the penalties of crimes most likely committed by a person belonging to at least one of these two classifications are extremely lenient, but any other crime is punished as harshly as they can?
True, the laws are also influenced by the dominant religion of the region, but is there not even one passage in the holy Quran that has a harsh word to say about killing someone through neglect? (eg. speeding) I find that hard to believe, seeing as the lessons in the Quran are the teachings of an omnipotent timeless all-knowing benevolent being who happens to care immensely for his followers.
Anyway, the laws here protect only the nationals and the cash cows, and f**k the rest.
F**k us, huh? Well, F**K YOU right back. F**K your rules, F**K your racism, F**K your bullshit hypocrite government. That is all.
Have a pleasant day.
