A FarewellA Story by Aram AlexanderGoodbye is a painful word.I wrote you almost every day, but words cannot hold your hand or kiss your cheek or lie next to you at night. Today, your last letter started, today a butterfly landed on my shoulder, and as I looked at it, it flew away. In its' stead were the eyes of a man. Deep green and still following patterned wings through the air. I tried but I could not look away, and when he noticed my staring he smiled, and I could do nothing but smile in return. I am so sorry my love, but I knew right then that we were meant to be. I will always love you, but I have come to realize that I was never in love with you. I never meant to deceive you, and if I did, I deceived myself from the very start.I pray you understand. With regret, Your Past You have a name, but I always called you 'Love'. Fitting, in retrospect, seeing as how similar love can be to chaos; both existing in life without rhyme nor reason, yet ever present, affecting us in unknowable ways. Love & Chaos. Two sides of the same coin spinning through the air. I smile despite the bitter ache in my heart as I blink away these unwelcome tears; you deserve happiness. Such is life; a butterfly flaps its' wings in one part of the world, and a heart breaks in another.
