On Living With The Past

On Living With The Past

A Chapter by Aram Alexander

It takes longer than you would think to get over things.
Like closing your eyes while you walk and judging how far you've gone before you open them again, the distance you will have covered is never as far as you would expect it to be.
And so we are perpetually let down at our perfectly logical inability to see with our eyes closed; so too by the realization that the memories of the things we tell ourselves over and over again that we've put behind us, still hurt us.
And so we never quite outrun life's disappointments.
Instead, we learn to live with our personal histories like candles in the dark; outshining the pain of the past with the joy of the present.
