I Got Clean

I Got Clean

A Poem by Peggy Gildon
"

Recovery is possible and life changing! It's wonderful!

"

I got clean just in time to see the damage I’d done

If it was a race to destruction then surely I’d won

I got clean to be happy to feel I’m alive

Though life is a struggle, I want to survive

It was easy to be an addict because I didn’t care

if the bills got paid, I was full of despair

I got clean so I work to pay for my past

To pay this and fix that now is my task

To right all the wrongs will take quite a while

But this race is my journey to go calmly in style

I got clean just in time to change my destination

To be happy and peaceful through self preservation

Most can't stop the downward spiral, so your story gives hope. If you're like me, you think about how much better a person you could've been and how much more you could have accomplished if not for the drugs/alcohol.

This rings so true for any addiction. I would say that this reminded me of my battle with cigarettes, which ended two years ago. Very solid and nicely penned and oh so true...
