The Words You Speak

The Words You Speak

A Poem by Paul Czerwonka

The words you speak
So gently pressed upon my chest
I love you.
The words you speak
Relieve the internal evil
Dwelling deep within.
The words you speak
You say them
But it doesn’t feel quite right.
The words you speak
The tone is different today
You love me, right?
The words you speak
So evidently hollow
Such vacant affection.
The words you speak
I can feel you letting go
I’ll just pretend you’re adjusting your grip.
The words you speak
I no longer cherish you
Months of devotion torn to nothing.
The words you spoke
My ears, my heart, my soul
Are no longer blessed
With the privilege of your tongue
But I still love you anyway
Even though you’re not here anymore.
