Birthday Candles

Birthday Candles

A Poem by Pawprints

I watch
As the house flickers

Flames twisting
Their way up the already crumbling staircases

The white noise
Of people calling for each other
Running footsteps

It bounces around my head
Making me dizzy

I can hear the black match snap

I can taste the guilt of someone I don't know

And the smell of birthday candles

So sweet and innocent
Now pounding with hate

And mixed with the slow snap
Of the match
