Storm Abated or Lost Love

Storm Abated or Lost Love

A Poem by Pauline

1.

Wild was the note and highly strung the squeal

that swirled around the shore in reedy cry;

Its piercing sound, like striking blades of steel

sliced through the velvet darkness of the sky.

The impulse of its congregated might,

(which grew upon its agitated dirge)

didst throw the sand from shore to zenith’s height,

like some general with a battle urge.

What good was it to cleave the sleeping trees

and wrench the resting warblers from their nest,

or bend the marram grass unto its knees?

(Far more than you bear weight upon their breast.)

What good is your dirge, your high-pitched squeal

as you spin aloft on your towered heel?

2.

But then upon that April eve of eves

Came by a weeping lass in tartan plaid.

With burdened, heavy heart of one who grieves,

She cried, ”Pray cease your breath you hoary lad!”

With cleaving heart she trod the grainy sand,

to mourn the loss of they who fought the field;

who now lay low beneath that moory land,

(choosing to perish rather than to yield.)

She sang of her laird who ne’er knew danger.

She sang for the men, most loyal to him.

“Oh sad be my heart,” sang this poor stranger,

What will I do now, my future lies grim.”

Oh where be my lover oh cruel fate?

Where? Tell me where, does my lover await?”

3.

The west wind now (a humble breeze) came by

and stroked her cheek in loving tenderness.

It seemed love’s spirit in her soul would die

for want of he who stood for righteousness.

But then, from out the grey came purple light,

as bright as Venus’s glimmering sphere.

Her stream of thought now changing to delight,

as she beheld his face before her clear.

‘Twas as if, through the silence of this night

he spoke, with words to quell her heart of strife;

washed clean her thoughts of hatred and affright,

spelt out a certainty of afterlife.

Now with her friend (the western breeze)

She walks this telling shore in peace and ease.

Really enjoyed the story, so much so I almost ALMOST forgot to appreciate the rhyme scheme. The scenes of a anguished lover walking distraught, and a ghostly apparition bringing her peace ? ! Bravo my friend bravo

This poem tells such a hopeful tale of finding peace after the loss of someone to war. Through out time many have had to endure the ravages of war and the many lives consumed by it. A sea of tears have been wept for those in passing with their memories never forgotten. Your poem brings a sense of comfort and peace in the aftermath. Wonderful work Pauline.

Dear Pauline, your three narrated stanzas reminding me of the style of the romantic poets like John Keats. Wonderful description and alliteration duly noted. Conveyed with skill and much enjoyed. Hope you are keeping well my friend.
