The girl in the red dress

The girl in the red dress

A Poem by Paul Bell

The girl in the red dress

Undressing life in stages

As the dustbin rises

Wasted youth on drugs

Vodka fuelled baby flushed away

Locked up to stay okay

Till that day

The girl in the red dress

Scarred deep inside

Reaching for what only faith could give

But faith went astray that day

Raped for fun

She cries as children play

In the midday sun

Nobody comes

The girl in the red dress

Lying in the dirt

In Between life and death

Losing the fight

Opens her eyes

To the brightest star

Beckoning her forward

Taking her pain

The girl in the red dress

Faith her friend

Like the sands of time

Finally at rest.

Thanks, Ghania.
There’s so much important imagery here that pumps your message as much as your obvious storyline. The red dress must be a significant symbol, possibly to suggest a flashy lady or woman of the night. Then later, the red of bloody lifetime scars. As always, your observations are harsh in a thoughtful way. Sometimes the seemingly bad ending is the one that is most transformative. Another of your brilliant thought-provoking writes (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Life is tough for some. Never ever getting the breaks.
A sort of tribute and reminder of these poor young souls who are scarred or die before their life has really begun...

Sad times out there for some.
The girl in a red dress could be from every where and any where. It is such a world wide issue . ( you are a champion for under dogs) .

Always a girl in a red dress.
Whew- no ‘happily ever after’ for “The girl in the red dress” whose life is so tragic that death is surcease. Told with graphic minimalism, maximum impact- “Raped for fun”..”Lying in the dirt”...the bell tolls for her in this eulogy of sorts . You eloquently and meaningfully tell the story of a life deconstructed by abuse and addiction while people witness, laugh, ignore. Important message for humanity here Paul. We have to notice and act, before it’s too late for all of us. Kudos.

It's strange, but some people just never get a break in life.
Broken people, broken lives. Sad stories that often end this way as a result of bad choices (although not always). Addictions spring to mind.

True, that happens too. So sad what some have to deal with.
That's a real sad poem...reflecting the reality of these days....
