The Dark Days

The Dark Days

A Poem by Paul Bell

He saw her through the dark days

It took time

But time was all he had

The battle, he was  winning

He could plan the future

Small steps

But steps nonetheless

They would walk, talk

He wouldn’t rush

The critical time would come

The second breakdown

He would be ready

Had to be

The pouring of grief trickling,

Flowing quicker,

Then the torrent

It was hell on earth

Described like an exorcism

She would sleep now

He could relax

Regain his thoughts

Plan the next step

He was in a positive mood

He went to check on her

No sign

His heart began to beat faster

Logic was lost

Run and search

Not panicking, but panicking

Blind panic now

Tears were flowing

In his mind he saw it

Dismissed it

Find her, keep searching

She was gone, he knew

Hated himself

He sat down in despair

She was watching him

Trying to take his pain

Reassure him

Take the burden away

It would take time

But time was all she had now

She was released

The pain had gone.

The only thing to do when a friend is in darkness is be a light for them and lead the way out, and hope they find the strength and courage to follow us. You need to put some kind of warning on this stuff so I can prepare myself a tissue, Paul XOXO Dani

No, no... I'm fine. I used the shirt sleeve, like the toddler I am.... I'm fine, I'll be fine

You can't beat the old shirt sleeve. lol
This is such a primal & palpable description of each step of this journey . . . stated briefly at each step, but also vividly. I've been on both sides of this equation & you've nailed it with amazing depth of observations. You've showed us how futile it can be to try to save someone who is hell bent on self-destruction . . . *sigh!* Very intense.

Yes, sometimes you can only do your best.
This one needs a tissue box warning....moving....maybe it's just me....maybe your just a talented revealer of expression.

Definitely a tissue warning.
when we take the darkness from another...often the burden gets so heavy that it puts in the same place as the person we just pulled out of it...

but the real friends are the ones who ease each other's pain...and aren't there just for the joyous times.

Yeah, good friends stay to the end.
Hey stranger, where is Paul and what have you done with him. I need him back.

(on another note, couldn't help but having some chills, that was quite dark)
