I love the parallels you're drawing between substances that are bad for us, along with apparent bad tidings from the narrator's beloved. Way back in my younger days, I didn't like cigarette smoke, but becuz it was intrinsically connected to many romantic encounters, I loved smelling it when kissing one or two of my ex's . . . same thing with beer, which I always hated, but it brought back lustful memories . . . so I totally get this connection you're describing! *smile*

Strange, so strange, how the most beautiful of experiences can cause such damage and - there's no a label or sign to be read pre.arrival, during presence but... is oh so very visible after tis gone.
You've wound your words so concisely and naturally around the theme. Takes reality as well as skill to do that.
