Dangling

Dangling

A Poem by Chloe..Across the Universe

she sits on a ledge in the rain
dangling her feet
on a monday
she sings a song no one
can hear but her
she used to be a singer
till an evil man in black
took her melody
she holds a book -
a pen writing a love letter
to someone she does not know
the rain blurs the blue ink
it looks like a painting
of the melody she once had
the rain stops
the sun comes out
she puts on her sunglasses
 pulls out a cigarette
the matches are wet
so she holds it
in her mouth unlit
this was her swan song
without a melody
her goodbye letter
without a word
her feet no longer dangle
they are crushed by the concrete
she now lies on
monday morning beneath
a sky of gray
the rain kicks its heels
and washes the blood away

I love the three opening lines - they set a whimsical scene so many girls can relate to - the idyllic time before men in black stole their joy. You bring it all back to reality in the last 4 lines...
monday morning beneath
a sky of gray
the rain kicks its heels
and washes the blood away.

Great work.

very emotional and powerful. Some songs we sing are sad ones and the imagery you paint here is vivid and clear.

I have never worn the black
but it does not excuse those who do
I enjoyed your dangled dreams
let no one ever steal your melody or your words.

An elegant word-painting.

well I'm depressed...thank you. More great and utterly sad poetry. Great execution of it fav line: her goodbye letter without a word. I love a poem that can tell such a complete story...very talented Chloe, very talented.

This is a very sad poem. You have taken great pains to paint a very clear picture. I assume that the the song is a metaphor for happiness. I read the rain as a metaphor for tears. I am very curious about the man in black. Does he represent anything more than a bad man who stole her mile?

Oh my! Life indeed moves in circles. How often and how swiftly does pleasure leads to pain and life yields to death. It's a cruel world we live in where evil men prowl the streets to snatch everything away and in the end what's left is a life that lives on the edge and quietly slips away to oblivion.

How emotionally apt is the rain... and the words fall down the page like the dripping of the rain, charged with sadness, aching with the gray sky

Now that I've thought about it, I may have played the melody killer myself once or twice. Not a good thought. Thanks.
