Update... As you all know nothing is changing ... people are in dire straights. One man shot himself... The pictures of the birds I have seen recently make a person sick. I could have been a seabird. You could have. Humankind has no mercy these days. I am sorry Waters, sea life, man and woman. I would fix this if I could.
All I can do is look in horror and pray. I wonder so many times about the Bibles prophecies of God returning to destroy the earth to make it new... as in my thinking it will be this earth, only new... but seems before he gets here we will destroy ourselves. He gave us a brain and free will and we did not use them for good it seems in so many cases.
Just my opinion.

I am sick and sad deep within my heart and soul. The fish are dying the birds barely flying, their feathers slick with oil ... waddling helplessly on the Gulf shores.. the beaches eroded.
Sand swollen and black. What are they doing? What can be done? It looks like a huge
black cloud shooting up through the waters. It is sad to see the sea life in such pain.

As a child we went to the Gulf of Mexico each Summer. Usually we would go to Galveston.
I loved it.. I remember it like yesterday.. the sun, sand, crabs, sea birds and the pier when I spent most of my time when I was not in the water. The salty water burned your chest if you were caught in a wave...but it was worth it.

I can't go there now .. The fisherman cannot make money to support their families. No beach picnics. No 'crabbing'. Just a huge oil slick from Louisiana to Florida. Dirty and foul .. the pelicans have no food.. the fish died , or are dying. The people are baffled, what can they do? Oil has been the reason for so much agony .... ! So many deaths.. from humans to sea and land animals. I wonder what they think of humans?

I don't know if they can fix this one .. please pray for the people and animals ...
It is honestly enough to make a grown man cry.. Oil and water do not mix!
This is an atrocity .. with a capital A.

Day 60... no solution... most of the Gulf Coast polluted dead sea life .. much more.. now the finger pointing games begin... Obama goes to the coast to tell the people, 'not to worry' and say all the right stuff....uh huh ...

Read this today... how true.

Down here on the Gulf, we've got our hands full battling the oil spill disaster that's killing our economy.

Our drowning tourism and seafood industries are just the tip of the Romaine (our good restaurants don't use iceberg) lettuce of businesses that are already suffering.

How could it get any worse?

Don't look now, but there's a breeze blowin'  off the southwestern tip of Africa.

Board up the windows and grab your ankles, folks. It's hurricane season. How does oil mix with water and wind? This is Alabama. All bets are off.

J.D. has got that right!

I was in the first Gulf war. My unit assisted in the cleanup of the large oil spill. It was very sad. In my 9 months i saw no living bird or fish in that water. Somebody screwed up. This oil spill should not of happen. Someone should of been inspecting the equipment. It should be a way to stop the flow.. What fool would create a pressure it can't stop. A easy answer. The greedy oil companies too cheap to pay Texas for oil at a fair cost. This is a very terrible thing. Everyone in the America's should be pissed off.Strong and true words.

How can we fix it? It's not easy and it sucks. The president (as Clinton says) gets entirely too much blame and entirely too much credit. There are three branches of government, but they are made of man. And man makes mistakes. It's horrible that this happened, amongst such environmental concerns. But I want to believe that we can turn this positive. Perhaps it will cause more people to help and want to help. Maybe it will help us get off oil completely. Maybe we'll avoid global warming. Maybe this is a good thing disguised as something bad.

"We can't have rainbows without rain"

Don't forget, It wasn't Obama or an american who did this to us. It was a greedy oil company. A non-american oil company (I know it's BP but I don't blame England either. I blame greed of the people in charge of the reckless companies, and anyone who let it happen. I doubt a lot of people though it would happen, but it did and someone needs to admit the blame, or agree to share it)

Yes, and sea-food might be a thing of the past here in Florida where I live, Love. That will be a real bummer, too. Sushi... eeeekkkk!!!!!! oh, no! But, I tell you - this tragedy is of BIBLICAL proportions, really! In Revelation, the prophet John of Patmos speaks of the sea turning black, am I right? A third of the sea? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I am very saddened with all this. I am only truly aware of it when I read others' work that clearly reflects this awful thing. I live right here in it, and I am too far into my own little meta-world that I fail to see what's going on around me. I'm ashamed of myself. But, anyway, Cloe... you are a very good writer in my opinion. Keep up the good work. People need to hear.

political glazing of tragedies~ finey crafted speeches~ contrived sympathy~ in the end none of it will matter when we're standing at the edge of starvation~ pollution~ on a globe desecrated by human hands alone~
your heartfelt scream is wrenching~ this is our reality~ it's almost surreal~
politics will skewer the world~

I shall refrain from comment on Mr. Obama.
It is horrendous! There should be no crap given
to any one wishing to help!! I wonder at the people
who 'so call' run our country, especially in time of turmoil.

You bring about such powerful emotion, your reflections about the beauty, your contrasts with the horror now. You help us feel the overwhelming nature of something others have been trying to play down for weeks. Amazing write with such an influence.

There seem to be many things that should have been done earlier in this catastrophe. Today, I saw the president saying “what do you want me to do, suck it up with a straw?” The sad thing is that two months ago, there were people describing just exactly how that could have been done.

There should be some fingers pointing at each and every one of us. Why have we allowed ourselves to remain so dependent on this oil? Oil companies do not want us to break our dependence ... if we don't need OPEC ... then we don't need them. We don't want to make the move from oil because we might pay a few extra dollars for different cars or changing infrastructure. Natural Gas pumps, solar cells, wind power. We are a very short sighted nation and we don't change until we absolutely have to. The cost is always far greater when anything is done at the last minute.

And the hurricane season in the Atlantic is just getting under way. Can you imagine another Katrina with oil and dead sealife? I don't want to. This enviromental nightmare is beyond control. It can't be fixed! It will take centuries for the ocean to heal, even with all the help that could be (and isn't) being provided. This could sweep all the way up the eastern seaboard in a storm. Main could have lobsters dying before this year is over.
