Purple Hearts

Purple Hearts

A Poem by Patricia Wedel

Hearts stop beating when people cease to breathe...
Flowers fade and become engraved on Stone with
names of loved ones who sacrificed their Life...
When memories dance on hallowed ground
where bombs became the Hot Air flight to
Paradise...
Where the Birds mourn when their Nests are
blown away and feathers become Rainbows of
Promises...
When Winter Snows become a Wonderland
of Climate change and Poinsettias paint a
Masterpiece of orchestrated Love...

You say it so gracefully, but I can tell there is darkness underneath: there is too much bloodshed and omens of more deaths to come…. So everyone suffers including our dear birds who have no nests to flee to….but perhaps winter will change and our hearts will become brighter, more vibrant and the killing will cease. Beautiful Pat

Powerful movement of words and thoughts dear Pat. Life is always changing and we must wait for the Spring sometimes. You danced on many subjects. I guess we must learn to accept loss. Thank you dear friend for sharing the amazing poetry and your thoughts.

I really enjoyed the description of the birds and by using the word "rainbows," it's safe to assume that it's a great number of different ones losing their habitats.
Despite some of the unpleasantness your poem conveys to us, you still seem somewhat optimistic at the end; the dualistic nature of being.
It's always nice to read pieces where someone is paying attention to things outside of oneself.

the birds are mourning now...and if this doesn't stop, they will mourn for the rest of what is left of us on this planet.

Preciously poetic and desolately truthful.

Wonderful read as we walk a fine line of what is and what could be. Fire and brimstone comes to mind as one can be haunted by the possibilities of life and death. How cheap it can be as we send those we love to hell and hope they survive. I digress. Lovely poem.

The problem with peace is this, just because you are a pacifist, it does not mean your neighbors will conform to your ideals. They see your peace-loving nature as a weakness because he who does not wage war does not prepare for war. As long as you have anything; money, home, land, family, friends, belongings, beliefs, customs, morals or intentions, there will always be someone waiting to take those from you by force. German Jews before WWII were very tolerant and submissive to government. Then they loaded them all into cattle cars and sent them away to the death camps.

Your 'Purple Hearts' poem is one of the most beautifully phrases pieces of writing about what is going on presently. Is it a coincidence that purple hearts are or were awarded for gallantry? Which came first the medal or the flower, dear Pat?

Many thank yous for sharing YOUR heart and mind.. both create such hope and calm, darlin', truly do.

Such a sad poem to reflect the times we live in. The loss of life, the suffering and the grief. Not only for people, but for our avian and animal friends. They can be forgotten when we think of human hearts, but they have hearts too. I googled and found the beautiful Purple Heart flower. The Purple Heart signifying respect and close friendship. Beautiful poetry. Love living things on earth’s rich crust for all too soon they turn to dust. A treat to read Pat.
