Downey Baby Woodpeckers

Downey Baby Woodpeckers

A Poem by Patricia Wedel
"

Born to be a drummer...

"
On a Cool summer day when a Wind blew through

I espied downy baby Woodpeckers on the ground

I knew the Mother would be around as I sighed...

Sure enough she was teaching them to fly...

My favorite Bird has graced the Trunk of our

Sugar Maple Tree... as I wake to the subtle

sounds of a heavy metal band with a Beat

that resonates with a soul-searching Red Crown...

Lovely write , we have the blackbirds that fall out of nests only to be guarded by the parents until the baby can fly.

Sounds sublime. I love watching birds in my garden too. It's so peaceful and dreamy. I like how you compared the woodpeckers to baby drummers.

And "Heavy Metal" it is; you draw a lovely picture of the "family" of woodpeckers, the mother caring for her young. And how loud can be, and the abstractness of their design on the maple tree .
A special scene Pat.

I imagine you watching all the activity from your porch Pat. How wonderful to see those baby woodpeckers taking their lessons. We have woodpeckers too, but alas not in my garden, but I have seen them in action. Fascinating to seem them knocking on wood. Yes little drummers they are. You delight your readers Pat, bringing them your love of our avian friends in all their variety. This morning I am moored on the river. We are graced by swans. They have been knocking on the steel hull of our boat, saying wake up, time for breakfast. Sending love across the pond.

Woodpeckers are such remarkable creatures. Years ago in my 20s I took a hike up along the forested area here in nor calif. I came upon one chipping away on a tree. It just ignored me and went about its work. It was such a lovely little bird I wanted to reach up and take it in my hands. Instead I just sat there on the ground and watched it for the next 30 minutes. That was a good day. Thank you Patricia for your wonderful poem.

that unmistakable, jackhammer rat-a-tat-tat. a song i long for since not living in a wooded area anymore. their mere presence is a blessing. wonderful creatures matched only by your wonderful, winged words of tribute to them. i am always left smiling after visiting one of your pieces, this one no exception. thank you for giving innocence, peace, grace and gentleness flight in this great write ... :)
