Always learning from your words Pat, your page is fast becoming my favourite nature show, filling a less colourful world with a bit of brightness against the gloom of the here and now.... or like here, the snow blindness of the now.
In the distance of snow covered trees, I hear aplenty but see little of our feathered friends. Leaving nibbles and juice to entice the shy. Even the (my) owl family seem to have had enough and moved on, or perhaps their vocal chords just need a bit of defrosting.
A much needed and appreciated splash of vibrant colour must be a welcome sight in such days of silenced wonder.
It's certainly a welcome view from here.

We will be having a Big Snow tomorrow Saturday evening into Sunday. I worry about our feathered friends. How do they survive when it is below freezing? They bring so much Color into our Life. It is Sad when an Owl family moves on... but they may return. I can recognize certain Red Cardinals as some of then have very distinctive markings. The females are more trusting; however th bright Red Male Cardinals are like the Secret Service... their Priority is to Protect the Heart of the Family. Hope you have a warm Hearth or Wood Stove for Warmth. tenderly, Pat
sadly this reminds me of nature’s splendours vanishing before our eyes. Nice write Pat as always with your flair and your kindness towards others, your character of substance shines through.
When, you, dear Petal, write about our fluttering, swooping and soaring friends, you make the All About fold us in its arms wherever we are. Am convinced you were once or twice, perhaps thrice.. a bird that flew the world and brought it joy. You do here and now, for me and so many others. Thank you so much. So hope you and Roger are as safe as safe can be.

Our birds do that outside our large Kitchen window... as they sit on Holly branches and watch me (the magic Lady) who may have some part in leaving the beautiful Buffet of Seed on the flat wide railing around the Deck... at least I feel that they somehow know, as they surely watch me place the Seed that suddenly appears. I for certain adore the winged song birds. It is a symbol of how we care for people everywhere. I think of you, Em, helping people sort their feelings on the help line...

Nice to see a fellow bird lover. I have 12 nesting boxes scattered around my property and the neighbor's. This time of year I see flocks of birds that I rarely see as singletons. Cedar waxwings, red wing black birds, purple grackles , in battalion strength.
Thanks for sharing.

I love how your poem teaches us about the migratory patterns of tanagers & then sorta flies off into a whole different kind of migration, taking the reader thru the symbolic nuances of this bird and its flight path thru one's heart & soul. Your tableau is as irresistibly feathery as can be. I'm nowhere near Emerald City, but I was transported there in your poem -- both as a place, feeling the magic of city of Oz, and also as a deep green forest (of which we have none around here!) This reminds me of the Native American way of assigning personal qualities to the various beings of the earth, including trees & rocks & mosses (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I love your descriptions of the Tanager; I'm sure we have them in the Appalachians. Your words are clear and flowing. I must look them up to see if they are around my neck of the woods. Lovely poem as always Pat.

Thanks everyone!! It's freezing here, maybe in the spring!
I love birds as well....I had a collection of model birds that I painted when I was a kid.
Painted Bunting, Baltimore Oriole, and Scarlet Tanager was one.
We had some of those in Central Park.
your descriptions are always eloquent.
