A Repertoire of Songs

A Repertoire of Songs

A Poem by Patricia Wedel

A Mockingbird perched on a Holly tree lives free...

undeterred by the raindrops drenching his feathers...

He knows his songs by heart of love found at last.

Flying from fencepost to Mailbox until one day...

He received a reply from the prettiest blue bird ever seen...

preening her feathers blue on blue.

He took her to dine on exquisite seed gathered from

thistles and oriental Bee balm...

Her Breast of orange and rose sighed when he

banded her leg with a golden flower of promises.

He crooned about Sweetheart kisses and days of

harmonizing and bringing her presents of soft duck down

to line her nest where fledglings would rest under her breast

warm and safe from the early morning dew...

and so their love grew from dusk to dawn

where winds blew flower petals around her brood...

and the Mockingbird knew he had met his Waterloo...

The birds in the garden sing so sweetly Pat. Each morning I listen as they start their day and make mine brighter. This little poem is a delight. Filled with song and romance. An uplifting write if ever there was one with a very satisfying ending. All good wishes winging their way across the pond to you and yours.

We go off and away to buy music in all forms and so we should to celebrate human creativity. Yet outdoors day in and out music in all voices and keys calls out to anyone who stops still and listens to how romance can turn two wee creatures into Romeo and Juliet on centre state! Nothing betters the morn chorus.. even to its fading into two voices calling across space!
The manner in which you carol about your winged visitors is so lovely, each poem special in its special way. . ' He took her to dine on exquisite seed gathered from thistles and oriental Bee balm... Her Breast of orange and rose sighed when he banded her leg with a golden flower of promises. ' Such passion, such bliss!

Woah Pat! Such a beautifully written piece of how love strikes when it's ready and can't be set like a watch... But I can only presume that you left the last line out intentionally, for all us to sing it like a class full of kids... And they all lived happily ever after. 😀
Some of us already appreciated the sound of natures song before covid, but all that lack of traffic and people made it sound even better and gave us a glimpse of how the world used to sound before the industrial revolution.
Who wouldn't want this soundtrack playing in their garden? Instant cure for stressed out ears 😀

Pat, you have written beautifully of the sweet surrender of love... waterloo often refers to a defeat, but for these two love birds, it was a place of happiness... nicely done Pat
