Whippoorwill Song of Longing

Whippoorwill Song of Longing

A Poem by Patricia Wedel

Days of leisure with Blue Bells ringing

in notes of Lavender blue Sonnet Songs...

The Lillies by the Creek shyly speak of

stolen moments of P***y Willow smiles

while all the while Bees are buzzing and

Butterflies romancing the Sky without a sigh

The Wind is dancing through the trees where

nests of Chickadees lay guarding their eggs...

Rain drops and flower petals fall upon the

moss of an ancient Rose of Sharon tree...

I think of Thee my Nightingale of Berkley Square.

just as magic as any painting, your 'stuff' is always wonderful to read,
soft and gentle with no axe to grind
our birds of summer are slowly slipping away
The swallows are gone and the Grossbeaks seem to be moving along
Even the Robins might have left
The Ravens and Towhees will stay all winter with some of the hummers but most of the babies are up and about and stretching their wings
Hope things are under control there

Such a romantic you are dear Pat and your thoughts here are woven so intrinsically with nature and all the beautiful things she gives us. Your days of leisure are a gift to your readers. Birds, butterflies, raindrops, flowers and scent. All the ingredients for a sprinkling of happiness. Also you have mentioned Rose of Shannon and I have a fine specimen of that gorgeous sunny yellow shrub in my garden. Right now she is lifting her blooms up and smiling in the sunlight.

This is a wonderful immersion into the moment as felt by the writer, and given freely to readers. It seems to me that the images are sound and sight, hearing everything as well, and feeling treated to a spring and summer now joining the backstage wings of time. I really appreciate the birds mentioned; all the imagery...it goes right down, smaller, to butterfly and plants. It's a good piece and I'm glad you shared it. In just a few words, you capture a lot. And who is the Nightingale of Berkley Square? It's a comfortable end, just one that leaves me with one question - though with "Thee" capitalized, I think I may know. Good job.

Your picture of such a special corner of the world makes me smile, tear up, thrill at, dear Pat. It's like having words wrapped around the heart and mind.. relaxing, colourful and an airful of sweet birdsong. Lovely sights this time of year, watching small nothings begin to fledge then.. then.. take their fkughts perhaps bough to bough.. A sort of first rehearsal of aerial mystery. You tell your world with great elegance, dear lady. Thank you.

Beautiful words thank you. Happy wishes to you and Roger. Keep safe, petal!
I looked up "Berkeley Square" -- not wanting to assume it's the hippie-ville located 3 hours north, near where I was born in the SF bay area. I discovered many Berkeley Squares from LA to London, so I might never know exactly where you did your early fluttering with some long-ago Nightingale?!?!? The thing I love about this poem -- what an array of flora & fauna! You've outdone yourself being inclusive of all the possibilities out there in nature! Sometimes I can't even REMEMBER this much flora & fauna, that's why I'm so impressed! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Lydia's response is the best! Thanks for leading me to it!
love it...no political undertones...just nature and the love of it.
