Hollyhocks Rock

Hollyhocks Rock

A Poem by Patricia Wedel

Hollyhocks bloom like pretty ladies

with too much Rouge...

All dressed up with bright pink Pearls.

looking for high school sweethearts...

Flowers that dance the Jitterbug

when the Band plays "Ain't no Mountain

High enough... just call my name" ...

Every muscle moves in every groove

when Vinyl records were stacked high

we could really dance the Jitterbug...

Care to give it a try ???

Greetings from across the pond Pat. I need to put on my dancing shoes and get in the groove. Yes your words rock. You also gave me a wonderful memory. Nothing much grew in my Nan's backyard. Her house in the shadow of the arches and electric trains, however there was one hollyhock that came back every year and grew so tall. It was taller than me and a deep cerise colour. A little bit of brightness in a yard of darkness. Thank you this morning for memories of flowers and music. So uplifting a read. Thank you my friend.

I love to dance! It's an expression of the soul...and so much fun!
Another great metaphor; hollyhocks are like people; they like to dress up, wear pearls, look for high school sweethearts, and groove and move their muscles to vinyl records, especially the jitterbug! And I remember all those moves as a teenager....lovely poem Pat. Best, Betty

I did like this one dear Pat. Best days, dancing and good song.
This is my favorite poem of yours in a long time & it's becuz I've been in a nostalgia warp lately, ever since a high school friend posted some party pics from the 1970's. This goes hand in hand with my own reminiscing lately. I am in love with all your details, which bring this baby alive! Set this on fire! You've killed it with nostalgic references. I love how you start with the hollyhock & I was imagining how there would be those who scorn the ones that stand out (rather than conforming) & this poem is rocking a big howdy-doooo to all those that shake their tail feathers with a flamboyant flourish (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Your words today made me sway easy, more like a tall reed in a light breeze than attempt the fandango... I guess I'm more of a funky chicken kinda guy than a full on jive geezer... love to watch the salsa and waltz tho..

dear Kay-T... I appreciate your charming review.
truly, Pat
Ah rouge, You don't see enough rouge these days. I seem to remember it being more prevelant in my youth and imagine tipsy aunties at a social gathering (remember those?), with drink in hand and twinkle in eye. I always got extra pocket money at these events, which I completely put down to rouge and not drunkenness 😀
And real, actual vinyl too! (go on kids, look it up on wikipedia)
It's probably the one good thing we can thank hipsters for keeping alive. Cd and download sound way too surgical and the odd skip only added to the atmosphere.
Ahh, I think I'll spend the rest of the day reminiscing.... Sigh 😀
