How to fly

How to fly

A Poem by Patricia Wedel
"

under the cover of bright orange Zinnias...

"
I fell for a northern Flicker with a gentle expression
His mating involved bill touching, bobbing,
and spreading wings...

Being a female southern Flicker, I returned his favor by
dancing and calling wick-a-wick-a-wick-a...
with intervals of seduction and a bit of plucking...

I knew we would mate for life and my intention was
to be his wife for better or for worse...
until death us do part...

Mating among the Zinnia's is a romantic rendezvous
and a possible coup... a brilliant, sudden, and usually
successful stroke of luck...

We will share the responsibility of teaching our
offspring "How to fly"...

I enjoyed the bird watching. Watching a toddler climb 15 ft high steps...it's the sort of thing we do in the park around here. And we try not to distract her by yelling, "hold on" ...but we are there to catch her at the bottom of the "big kid" slide. I love the birds.

Patricia, your poetry oozes romance in the most beautiful of ways always.
These birds, so lucky they are to fly together.

You are right my friend. We must teach our offspring to fly fearless and strong.

I understand the above line. Me and poor wife are trying. Thank you Patricia for sharing the amazing poetry.

When it comes to us humans and the high incidence of marriage breakdown, could do well by taking a leaf from ( or a feather) from the humble Zinnia!

Love, courtship and matrimonial devotion at its very poetic best...beautifully penned Pat!

What a lovely poem, with a thoughtful message. Those Zinnias know more than they make out! I watch the pigeons on the roof tops, with their seduction antics. The male bows to his mate and then they gently nibble beaks. Quite right too!
