Spring ---(The Way It Was )

They were here, my liege, three of them.

A gray, a chestnut, a palomino

Centaurs all--- The Gray,

his hair silver in the spring morning light-----

A wise, cautious look in his emerald eyes.

The Chestnut, frisky, chasing butterflies. His beige mane

bright and streaming, muscles aquiver as he stood in

the soft spring sunlight tossing his neck side to side;

attempting to free a Monarch entangled in his wind tousled mane

But oh the Palomino, golden!

His white mane sparkling, water---

sheeting his flanks, reflecting Joseph’s

coat of colors in shadow dappled stream.

As Phoebus dancing between the trees

Captured him in cage of slivered silver light,

The gentle spring breeze carried the scent

of fresh bruised grass, lilacs and daisies

as the two yearlings gambol about the flower dotted meadow.

Feeling for the first time the latent power of muscle

and bowstring taunt tendons yearning to be stretched.

Suddenly, swiftly, without warning a huge

Roan thundered from the surrounding glade.

Sweat gleaming like iridescent pearl drops on forelegs and chest.

His auburn hair tangled in the wind of his passing

He galloped into the limpid stream, his flanks seemingly sheathed by

gleaming greaves of bronze as he plunged hoof first the crystal waters

causing droplets of sparking water to gleam like sapphires, rubies,

golden amber and white diamonds as they flew into the air.

Yes, they were here milord, in the bright morning.

Stay close sire, do you not hear? They approach,

not noisily like Zeus’ thunderbolts flashing across the sky,

but as noiseless as Artemis dappling leaves with

shadowed silver from Her magic paint pot.

Listen lord as barely audible rustlings of soft zephyrs

sigh through trees, stirring crickets who join

the forest sounds with their evening hymn to Artemis.

Arousing fairies whose ethereal lanterns light the dark

beneath the trees like stars light the night sky.
