The Muse Betrayed

The Muse Betrayed

A Poem by Patches I'm not so new anymore.

The Muse Betrayed
(A warning from the Traveling Troubadour)

Poets should never love those
of the fairer sex.
particularly if she be a poetess,
by the Nine!* It should not be done!

A poet dwells in a world
Not meant for mortals to see
poets must live alone;
to pen their fantasies.

It is only through the Nine
That people are allowed to see
A world where fairies
and magic are the reality

When the poet’s Muse
says, “come, fly with me.”
Is the poet to refuse? Say “nay
it cannot be?

I love a mortal dear Muse
I canst no longer go with thee
to fly the winds of fairie
to laugh, to love as if I were free”.

“Fool!” quoth the Muse,
were thou not warned by me
if thou were to love a mortal
I wouldst abandon thee?”

“Dear lady do not leave
I beg of thee, for how
without thee couldst I have writ
the lais that brought this
mortal to her knees?”

“Thou must abandon this
enchanted bower,” said She
“Be gone foolish man
thou hast no claim on me”

*The Nine Muses of classic mythology.
