Carcassonne

Dear maman and Aunt Jehanne

I have had no time to write since arriving back in Carcassonne, I hope you both will forgive a busy solider for neglecting, through no fault of his own, his dear mama and aunt.

All of my time since returning has been taken up as secretary to his Excellency,

catalouguing and packing the accoutrements that must accompany an army on the move and seeing that the new recruits get at least rudimentary  training in archery. I have not had a full night's rest since I have returned.

However , enough with the excuses. I am writing now to let you know that it may be sometime before I may be able to write again. We will be moving to meet the French and drive them out of Languedoc for what I hope will be an eternity.

The French are again preparing to invade Languedoc this time somewhere from the northwestern part of the Aquitaine, march through the Dordogne region and enter Languedoc  near the small village of Lot.

His Excellency means to stop de Mountfort before they get to the Languedocien region.

Preferably in the Aqutaine  and drive le boucher back into France with stinging loss.

I have, in my position as the Count's secretary written to Savaric deMauleon Seneschal of the Aquitaine and we have his permission to cross into the Aquitaine and arrest the French progress by whatever means necessary. We start from Carcassonne within a sennight and hope to be near the village of Ste Cyprien in three or four days. The Count is looking forward to the confrontation as am I. If all goes well, we will soon send the northern vermin scurrying back across the border to the safety of their hovels Pray Mama  that this coming fight ends with our victory and that the French bother us no more.

                     Your son and Nephew

                         Raphael

What captured me to this read this was the date. I am in the process of learning more about this time period as I love history, but for some reason I always skim over this era. I thought this letter was informative on a historical aspect...yet, I felt the soldier's emotions as he wrote his loved ones!! I definitely will go back to read more!

#1. I enjoy reading, because your chapters are never too long for my busy schedule and also because you write with such adept descriptive knowledge of this battle
