friend?

friend?

A Poem by Richard
"

a new friend a new friend a new friend

"

So much more winter

dripping from last year

the mere thought of a splinter

hadn't occurred

I can see you've got so much more to find in your painting

muttering to itself it has no blue

the apple, in your pocket, has changed with the season

you had a list of things to remember

and they too have to be done

a miracle your cracked lip healed in those months that welled

and you hexed what he hexed

your zest

for some of this and some of that

sunspots such lovespots

come quick hey

it's father … he's long since divorced

his angry ways

you kept on giving and he kept on thanking

you wouldn't stop the giving

others came around

for a while

if only to see where you'd actually come from

your wind-addled home

home plate and the catcher's glove

worn down to the dirt

the burial ground an astounding lost soul put to rest in there

you thought you'd never make another friend

but you opened your eyes and found one

without once shutting down

she wasn't interested in your faults

and every so often she'd remind you that what you did

was wrong

but what you had was so strong

because of the compromise

you saw the difference

the sacrifice you both had to make

and why you mattered

at great length

like the string
