Scarecrow's Song

Scarecrow's Song

A Poem by Richard

THIS is a scarecrow's song

it goes up real high with elation

and then down real low like the moon

like summer breeze on an irritated scorpion

breathing life to that airstream

nay, a hayfield

a sad sad song with a hint of promise

light as straw

then in a moment

heavy as a house

all you do is hangout

sometimes you dance

you protect us from crows

you basically scare them

from eating our crop

you don't have much free time, scarecrow

to compose your own song

or catch crooks

from stealing corn or your flannel

clothes

I was gonna' name you Galloway H. Woods

but chose Flynn instead

it just sounds mightier

…maybe more real

yet, nobody sees past your boring stare

and into your world

but when I look hard

I get a headache

then I see glass and I keep looking

through a field full of hops't

a kid at a carnival trying to win a tough as nails hammer game

he was blown' in the wind so couldn't qualify

he had a trampled old top-hat

just like yours

and an old torch because he stayed all night

just like an old cigar

I thought he was your son maybe

but i looked further on

and learned his fear of candles

and fireworks really stemmed from

years under a sky lamp

and when he danced to your song (an early version)

like he was having a seizure

I realized it was you, scarecrow

who changed a leaf
