On Her Special Day

On Her Special Day

A Poem by Richard

On her special day

she can choose the hill

and roll down it in any shape she wants

and on her special day she can reflect all day at the windowsill with her scrapbook full of various windows of the world

seen through the eyes of a snail and a magpie

Her special day

she can make money disappear just as fast as honey

and take a ride on the Gentlebound Ferry

as it huffs into town

and visit not just one but two delicious dress shops on her way down to the river

to get a drink of life in her own uncertain terms

my only request on her special day

I whispered to the gondolier

just a kiss in the sunset as we pass by our crumbly old sunday school church

like a grapefruit and a dragonfruit when they get together in a bowl

It's her special day, and I promised no silly metaphors

just some swanky live music from some funky jazz locals

and finally, a carriage ride home through the hush-hush cherry blossoms of Yawnsville, New Joysey

"Not cherry bosoms"

And since I said it was her special day

a personal journey I'd promised

and I hope I delivered

because you mean everything to me

and not just on your special day

you get a lot of them

and you know

 they're special for me too
