Unpublishable

Unpublishable

A Poem by Richard

They tell me I’m un-publishable because I am me.

They’ve been telling me, not uncertainly,
since I was 3.
But how could they possibly know

whether me as a kid, could, or now, can

express myself in this way?
“Like his wrist was crushed in a printing press

..and his brain just melted and died”
I was wounded from the elbow down

I thought it harsh, abusive, unfair, and unjust!
Granted, my imagination WAS on permanent vacation
but that’s no reason to bust
One night my hand began shaking and writhing
I lost control, it just slithered down to the page and

worked late through the next day
The sun came up, the moon came down

the smell of coffee from cigarette lounge
kept me sane
kept me crazy
stark raven mad
Finally I finished, I looked down by my pen

an ink-blotch, half a sonnet, and the names of some ex-girlfriends

Ohno!

I really was unpublishable, undesirable, unlovable, unhirable
So I quit the biz
though I hadn’t been in
I became my own worst critic

I ate alone
….  And after I died they published this poem

Just an amazing write :)
Well done.

This makes me think of the man who wrote 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' series. He never sought publication until just prior to his passing; and it wasn't until he passed that his work was finally published. A true poet doesn't write for publication. He writes because he must, because it's a soul-fulfilling task, because it lends a voice to all that would otherwise remain silent. He writes because he must and knows no other way. It's an innate calling that cannot be quelled.

Good job!
