The almost whale of wales

The almost whale of wales

A Story by Richard

Once, before the invention of the automobile, in a small town in the heart of south Wales, there lived a dolphin.
Of course, the dolphin didn’t live there.

she was just passing through. She was stranded from her family following an oil spill in a nearby seaport. She swam up and down the river looking for her family, day and night, crying out like a siren.
Having heard news of this oil leakage, as well as 'a crying girl' in the river, 9 year old Sam Sampson thought he would be a hero and rescue this girl. Also, he was left in a bathtub at a very early age and was himself mortified, so his heart went out to this crying lost girl..
He snuck out of school early on a Friday afternoon and made his way down the ravine and across the marmalade marshes and pushed back the weeds and then stopped in his tracks. He could hear her. she was just yards away now. Funny, Sam thought, it didn’t sound like a crying lost girl. He was at the edge of the river now and he climbed down a cliff and followed the cries down the banks. “Meeeeeeeeeeeeka” cried the girl.
“Don’t worry! I’m coming to rescue you!” shouted Sam as he ran and stumbled being careful not to fall in himself.

Suddenly, the cries stopped and a head poked out of the river. This was no crying girl. It was a dolphin!
Sam gasped. The dolphin swam upstream fighting as hard as she could to reach him and Sam ran downstream fighting as hard as he could to reach her. He had never seen a dolphin before. He was a little shocked.
Finally, the dolphin pushed on and sam reached out and the dolphin jumped up into his arms.
“Woah!” cried sam falling back onto his back pack. He was laughing and frightened at the same time, he had no idea dolphins were so people friendly. The dolphin licked his face with gratitude. Sam licked him back.
“I’m taking you home with me, my new friend” Said Sam.
On his way home Sam pointed out all the great buildings and sights for the dolphin to remember. He doubted he would though, after all, he was used to seeing nothing but ocean for miles. Talk about a boring life.
Sam stopped at a nearby store and ordered two cokes for him and his new friend. The shopkeeper looked at him as if he was crazy.

“You gots’ta keep that guy chained up outside next time, a’right?” said the shop clerk.

“I rescued him all by myself he’s basically my new best friend” Sam replied.

Sam and the dolphin finished their cokes just as the sun was setting. Suddenly as he was walking home, Sam looked down at his new friend and thought he looked a bit sad.
“You miss your family, huh?” He asked him.
“Meeeeeeeeeka” said the dolphin.
“Meeka, is that your name?” asked Sam
“Meeeeeeeka” said the dolphin
They came to an old fork in the road, but not a real fork, just a divide, and Sam could feel a tear dripping down his cheek and he tried to stop it but it fell onto Meeka and Sam knew what he had to do..
He took a right instead of his usual left. It was getting very dark now. He ran as fast as he could. Books were falling out of his bag but he didn’t care. He made it finally to Salamander Beach. He took his shoes off and ran across the sand stomping on sandcastles running and running as fast as he could. As soon as he got to the ocean he stopped. He looked down at Meeka and stroked her. She looked sad.
He said goodbye and pushed her gently back into the sea.

Dear Poet Richard🐬

'Tis a most wondrous, beautifully sad tale you tell of a young, lost girl with a tenderhearted dolphin tail … I wonder if she was crying “Meeeeeeeeeeeeka” out to her family from loneliness and sorrow, in fear that she was lost.
Your story brought a soft, poignant tear to the eye of an olde bard's deeply-touched heart … thank you for sharing the kindhearted goodness in your soul.

You are such the imaginative fine storywriter, my very skilled namesake...✍
Bless you your gentle heart … ever your fan! ⁓ Richard 🍃
