The Ship of Love

The Ship of Love

A Story by Dara
"

“Harboring sweet thoughts of you.”

"
Once they were two lonely poets.
Living on opposite ends of the world,
they often felt like two ships
passing in the night.
Occasionally they would ‘dock at
the same port’, allowing a special bond
to grow under the starry night sky.

They would often caress each other with carefully chosen words,
poetic in nature
and smooth as rolling waves
lapping against a sandy shore.

Sadly, however, fate changed their course.
No longer could they see each other’s ‘lights
flickering in the distance’.
The days and nights were filled with only silence and questions left unanswered.

With salty tears rolling down her face
she steered against the current of
unrequited love, knowing it was never
meant to be but yearning for
what might have been.

Then, remembering the words of a John Denver song, her thoughts soon turned to
music, a habit she had developed since childhood whenever she felt sad.
Softly she sang to herself…

“Perhaps love is like the ocean
Full of conflict, full of pain
Like a fire when it's cold outside
Or thunder when it rains
If I should live forever
And all my dreams come true
My memories of love will be of you.”

The words had a calming effect
and her gaze was drawn
to the ‘quiet waters flowing’ before her.
Though her heart was heavy
she was able to force a little smile.
“Tomorrow is another day.”,
she spoke out loud to no one
and soon she was back on course
with smooth sailing ahead.

This is a moving story. Sad and beautiful. I'll have to check out that song by John Denver. Somehow your story with the title made me think of The Crystal Ship by the Doors. You write well.
