The Undersea World Of……A Poem by John Alexander McFadyenI recntly did my 8th DiveYou drift above me, a flick of your muscular tail enough to propel you forward as you cruise the depths. You are a true predator a killing machine built for purpose but much maligned without reason by we humans. Your dorsal fin immortalised in ‘Jaws’ the cinematic creation of Steven Spielberg, the king of directors. But I watch you in awe, a magnificent specimen of sleek marine life second to none. The ampullae of Lorenzini on your snout sense the electric fields emitted by animals in the
surrounding water, letting you home in on prey quickly, and at speed, in the final attack phase. You are indeed an apex predator, some would say a cold-blooded killer, but the fact is that you play a vital role in the health of marine ecosystems. Me, I don’t belong here beneath the waves, scuba diving a la Jacques Cousteau, and I am humbled. 15/10/23 © 2023 John Alexander McFadyenReviews
