The Way it Is

The Way it Is

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

Age and time passed dampens the will.

"

All of my ambitions crumble

and fall away like dead skin

flaking to dust upon the floor

of my dreams.

I have watched as the invincible, high and mighty

icebergs of my aspirations

fractured, cracked and slid away

into the ocean of time,

swelling the sea of lost opportunities

in which I drown.

And I realise,

perhaps now is the time to let go.

The time to tread water and simply watch

my children reaching for the sky.

Honest and strong words John.
"And I realise,
perhaps now is the time to let go.
The time to tread water and simply watch
my children reaching for the sky."
I understand the above lines. I back away now and I allow my children to fight life. Hard to do. Thank you my friend for sharing the amazing poetry and your thoughts.

The literary devices you used here are great. I makes the picture clear and open its content to be understood.
There are so many lesson I've learnt from this.

For everything there is a season...you beautifully and rather sadly captured the ebbs and flows of life and the everlasting hope of reaching higher.

Thank you for your kind review Kira.
yes, after years we seem to lose interest in our dreams...or they beat us down and we say Uncle.

Love that song too Jacob. many thanks!
That dreaded feeling that comes with age, that we have not achieved everything we set out to do. I say, swallow it and let your children and grandchildren take over. When time is limited, people count more. Great metaphors here and vivid imagery. Happiness comes in tiny parcels.

Thank you for your kind comment Anushka.
There is sadness in your words, and it made me look at my parents as they watch us reach for our dreams and live a life of our own, and they take a seat back from the willingness to conquer more heights for the family. Time was our opponent. I wish they never grow old.

It does seem, as we get older, that our aspirations slip away from us. Well penned,
