East Midlands to Bergamo

East Midlands to Bergamo

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

Our Journey from England to Italy.

"

East Midlands to Bergamo

Above the clouds

the sky blue

goes on and on,

reaching into space,

touching the stars,

flowing into the

infinite darkness

that surrounds us.

Below,

lightly dotted puffs

of cotton wool

float upon the sea of air.

And I wonder

what lies beneath

these man made wings.

Under the sky in which

we hang

I see the quilted

fields of the Rhone.

I envisage

it's quiet country lanes

and sleepy villages

where locals lunch

upon bread and cheese and wine

and drink strong black coffee

with the aroma

of sweet-smelling Cognacs.

I resolve that one day

I will join them

sitting round the sun drenched square

watching a game of petanque

idle gossip on their lips.

Suddenly, looming,

the jagged icing topped

dark peaks of the Alps

break my train of thought

with razor ridges

and snowy, craggy slopes;

the solid rock

that binds France

and Switzerland and Italy.

Soon we are gliding down,

our decent accelerating

as the tarmac runway

of Bergamo rushes to greet us.

Thank you Leslie. We had an amazing time and both fell in love with Varenna and Lake Como.
Another fine journey John. You definitely have a knack for taking the reader where you want. I've spent significant time in both places and you took me back. There is texture and aroma in your words. Nice job my friend.

You are welcome John.
Hmm, this is quite pretty. You've got a hell of a lot of potential. However, you've got some incorrect punctuation and a few of the words you chose could be replaced with smoother, simpler ones to help the flow along. Other than that, amazing job.
