The Encounter

The Encounter

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

Often we meet people and a mutual interest is instant.

"

The Encounter

We break the ice with platitudes,

ice picks with linguistic blades

and firm oak shafts.

We bow and curtsy

with polished grace

and eyes engaged.

We delve with

soft and quiet questions

like in a tennis court

warm up session.

Courteous, probing

but always ensuring

the return of serve

over the net interest.

We so long to stay

in the cool breeze of

introduction,

to end the stretching of muscles

and play for real,

but our sense of duty,

our idea of protocol

and social etiquette

denies us

the opportunity to linger.

And we part

to never meet again.

great John! I had wondered where we were going but the end did leave me feeling sad for the prospective lovers who failed to get passed their social etiquette and lost the chance to love and just be together, a sad but lovely write with just a little tennis, thanks for the read, loved it :)

I really like those lines and I believe there is such a deeper meaning than just whats on the surface. When something is new there is always that sense of freshness and fresh feelings... a spark that eventually dies off but wanting to stay in that introduction phase of happiness is an amazing feeling. I love the way those words sparked those feelings good work :)

I agree Aaron, the beginnings are often much easier. Many thanks.
Hello John, this reminds me of the One that got away, loving that image of a tennis court warm up session, very clever if I may say.
Wonderful write all around! :-) Thanks for Sharing!
