Time To Stop

Time To Stop

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Time to Stop

Winter will soon be here

with her clawing, nagging cold breath.

And as the days recede, like old man’s hair,

the nights close in from both sides of the twice carved day,

to trap us in its vile grip as the icy witch throws down her cold coat.

The wind bites now as I rush from kitchen door to my garage,

in the dawn before my long daily commute,

to empty the guilt from my recycle basket,

and retreat with haste

back into the suffocation of false warmth,

pumping like life support

through the creaking, groaning pipes

around my house.

Oh that I could skip a beat

and miss these desolate frosty days

to awaken with spring upon my face again.

For this cynical cycle of seasons

serves only as a cruel reminder

of the passing years

and the life that slips evermore from my grasp.

Life is fleeting! You capture the essence of it slipping by us, realizing there is finite time even in the passing seasons. Cyclic yes, but our time here is not forever. A harsh reality so eloquently expressed!

Thank you QSS
Yah.... boy have I been there!! That mood that grips me as I get older, making more urgent those things I would still like to accomplish.

Wonderful use of the Autumn season to portray a human condition. :)

Fantastic poem John...yes winter is harsh and dark but without it the spring would not be as wonderful.

Thank you AMS
This is the finest old man winter I've ever read John, I felt the chill whilst reading, seems many of us dread this time of year, reads frosty, chilling to the bone and full of despair....

'to empty the guilt from my recycle basket'

That line alone is money my friend!

Hi my Lady, (bows low as always) your kindness is so uplifting!
Well I certainly dread the winter, yet the hot fires burning within will keep my thoughts warm for awhile...Nevertheless, I have no doubt that through the years it will build the icy cynicism towards each season passed... You have written a theme in which many can relate to... we all dread time..for she never slows down... Thought provoking write, John. :)

About
Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
