Sleepless Poets

Sleepless Poets

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Sleepless Poets

Sometimes,

when our minds are uncluttered by life,

when free from the chains of time and expectation,

in that silent space between night and day,

we rise to creation.

Our minds can explore the universe

our hearts can feel each and every warm ray of sun;

reach into the heavens of our love and adoration.

Or we can plumb the treacle black depths of hell

to find the darkest of our despairs,

to feel each and every cut and blue bruise

that forces its pain upon our wracked and tortured hearts.

We collect these deep, moonlit thoughts,

then strike the keys to purge them

one by one

from the virgin pages

of our over tired minds.

And so,

 another write is done.

Wonderfully stated John. This poem articulates the wonderous mind of a poet. Our brain never stops. Words run together with no meaning until they hit the page. Then out of the depths of our soul, a masterpiece. Even if only to ourselves. This is your masterpiece. Very well done.

Thank you so much Sheema
I woke up last night from a sound sleep and scratched some words on the back of an envelope with a dull pencil in the dark. I have no earthly idea what they mean, but I'm definitely going to work them into something...I owe those thoughts that much. I liked this one a lot, John. I'm glad you had it in you, and even gladder you purged it onto the page.

A sympathetic view of the poetic creation process, possibly less of a torture than some of us find - treacle black is a striking phrase, reminding me of 'Bible black.'

Och noo.
This is plausible, Mr. McFayden. We, and our mind really are sleepless always searching for something that we can write about. Today, I got really crazy when I only have the back of a receipt to write a poem on. I wasn't even able to complete it!
