Despair

Despair

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Despair

My spirit has become black as night,

dark inks pen my soul

with tattoos of the apocalypse.

Demons rising as devil’s spawn,

charcoal wings spread

across a bleeding sky

to shield my eyes from hope

and drive me to despair.

And if there is a God,

I don’t believe in him

for he has forsaken

every Christian vow

that was ever made.

Thank you Kiran you are most kind
Reading this I can see the ghouls circling me. Very depressing picture created here very effectively. Your imagination working wonders here John! I am totally identified with this pain for now! Thanks for sending me this worthy read!

Thanks John! Yes, enjoy I do, always! :)
Yes.....!!! Ilove this. Reminded me of an early poem of mine (but not as good) about visions of the dark horsemen of the apocalypse riding across the sky.

I love this.

Many thank yous Allan for such a lovely review.
Somebody needs a hug ;-)

I think Despair is too tame a word to describe this incredibly dark and desolate write. Really well captured, those feelings...excellent work, John...no surprise there ;-)

Ain't that the truth...Always my pleasure, John.
You can lose faith in many things when times seem dark. It's easy to do. It's easy to think that you have been left for dead when the walls around you are crumbling and the sun doesn't look like it will rise again. It's in those struggling times we grow.

Very true AHP, very true. Many thanks.
Like this, I often ( as a agnostic ) put my foot in it with religious poetry, as I hate being preached at - religion is fine, religious poetry too, as long as it is a statement of personal faith and not a command to think the same. And religion has produced some of the best poets, Donne, Herbert, Milton...

Very deep and dark story progression. to include God in this piece by asking, you drive the story from dark to light. Even there is a confusing faith but still you recognized the existence of God that makes this story great.
