Now He's Gone

Now He's Gone

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Now He’s Gone

You were with a poet once

but you never read his words;

cared not for his achievements.

His majesty was lost on you

for you, in dyslexic grief,

could only see yourself.

Could only be yourself alone,

no room for two,

kept your drawers full of pity,

stopped him in creation.

And yet you fed greedily from his fountain,

until he was dried

and cracked and worn,

a car wreck.

Is it any wonder

that now he is gone?

You were with someone who never read your work?! Please tell me that is a gross exaggeration to get your hurt across! That’s such a BIG part of who you are! Someone can't love you if they ignore something that means so much to you. I don’t know if this is any consolation to you, it definitely is for me. She missed out! Not just on great writing (and great it is) also that special connection that comes from reading someone’s 'heart'. You always put 'yourself' in your writing and that’s an amazing thing and she missed out on that. She would’ve had more to drain from your fountain.

Could ending be any better than this?

No problem:)
I can relate to your words here! Sometimes, others do not realize that "poet" is not just a title...it is a type of person....usually quite sensitive....who gives birth to poems as if in childbirth...works from their heart and soul. The entire poem spoke to me but I especially loved:
"You were with a poet once
but you never read his words;
cared not for his achievements.
His majesty was lost on you"

AND
"And yet you fed greedily from his fountain,
until he was dried
and cracked and worn," stress and turmoil can dry up the well that we drink from, our inspiration, our heartbeat. Later the pain will often produce our poems, but in the meantime it leaves us empty and questioning.
