I think this accurately sums up the distinction between controlling the drugs you take and allowing them to control you. It's too a slim tightrope to walk with complacency, and most drugs cause complacency, (or at least manic distractions like paranoia!), and then things go wrong and you feel isolated and depressed, so you take more drugs to cope, which makes you even more apathetic...it's a bit of a downward spiral that keeps people as stuck in their ways as the parents, peers and 'straights' they usually set out to oppose and/or rebel against!
