We Knew

“I’m so in love with you”

That’s what I said

Blushing under the stars

Playing with my fingers 

“I just thought you should know”

I couldn’t meet your eyes 

But I felt them watching me 

You didn’t speak

I looked up then 

Swallowing my fear whole

Chewing on my inevitable rejection

 

“You don’t have to say it back, buts it’s the truth”  

I smiled small because it was the truth 

My small hands framing your face

I didn’t need you to say it back

Knowing I loved you was enough

But then you guided my face up  

Looking me in my wide eyes 

Smiling so large I thought I’d go blind

“I’m in love with you too” 

You kissed me then

Under the star dotted darkness

And although neither said it

We both thought the same phrase 

 “I’m so in love with you”
