Little Mermaid

Little Mermaid

A Poem by AiH

When I go into the ocean

The waves caress my skin like an old friend

The sand buries my toes as if it wants to embrace me

I see the fish swim near by

Freer than anything I’v seen

They glide past my legs and whisper secrets

Of how the world I live isn’t the one I know

And how my home is here

 With them

The salt burns my eyes to remind me of the choices I’ve made

To conceal my sight so I do not see the mistakes that haunt me

I choke as waves pound against my chest

And a fiery blaze consumes my lungs as I breath in its welcoming flavor

I am no longer welcome in the water

As I shunned myself away from its pleasures a long time ago

I no longer indulge myself in its gifts

I chose my path of humanity

Long before I understood the sacrifice

I look out onto the horizon and watch

As the waves push and pull me

Back into old desires of walking straight into water

Until my feet turn to fins

And my ribs rip to gills

Maybe one day I’ll escape the ground

And I’ll wander back to where the sirens sleep

I will come back to place that birthed my soul

And let me explore this wonderful tragedy I call

land
