Imagination

Imagination

A Poem by Kathryn Smith

Even though you're tired

Of the screaming

The Crying

Demands

Boogers and Whining

Even though your exhausted

Of washing hand after hand

Mouth after mouth

Wiping butts and cleaning messes

You might think they see

Your annoyance

Sense your fatigue

Your frazzled mind

Your desperate eyes

But in a child's life

They see joy

You took them to the moon

They saw space

The solar system

Put your space belts on!

Your helmet!

Your suit and gloves!

Blast off!!

The moon tastes like cheese!

Pluto was sweet

Mars was red

We sat on the rings

And spun in the air

Saturn was their favorite

They didn't want to share

The space café served nuggets

and cookies that looked like Earth

She touched what anyone would see as dirt

From an ants home

But what she saw was Mercury dust

Comets and asteroids

Aliens and battles below

W i n g s U P!

Wheels up

Prepare for take off:

You might see a child running around

Arms out

Smiles on

But I made them into mini Pilots

Who soar at dawn

You sang them a song

The world from above

White streaks from a jet

A thrill

Of being up sky high

You might stress over the mess

Of chocolate all over the kitchen

But what they learned was math

The texture of food

The pleasure of chocolate

and the sweetness of cake

I might feel his playful punches

His jump on my back

But what he did was imagine

He was skippy the dragon

And somehow

That was enough

I mold futures

Tucking them into bed

And even if they take forever to sleep

I know there will be strong dreams

Real dreams

Creative minds

Brave souls

And the heart of the child

Will be kind

With stories to be told

As their futures unfold

Mom took us there
Oft it be
Why is beyond me

Though I am grown
I still dream of where she oft took me and my siblings
When I visit her, I still see, in her eyes, all my youthful fantasy

My mom was better than a best friend
She gave me gems more valuable than diamonds
Peter Pan had nothing on my mom

My mom gave us Wonderland every day
Our house, our back yard, a bounce on her back
All a fantastic journey into a fun filled journey we all enjoyed

I owe all I am to my mom
You see, to dream, to fantasize, to create
These were the gems my mom gave to us

I try to give to others what my mom gave to me
I hope I do as good as she did for me
I know I can never compare for one as great as she

I wonder, was she the grand mother to Peter Pan
You see Peter was not raised by his mother
This is why my childhood was better than Peter Pan's

A lovely journal in poetry which, for me, more than anything celebrates the vital preciousness of the present moment-an idea that all one really has is the now, the concluding ten verse brought everything together so very well, great writing

A poetic journal of the 'precious' moments to be savoured and enjoyed - for - before you know it, the space cadets fly off ... Exquisite! :-)

A spectacular journey through the mind of imagination, the source of the greatest achievements in history. Nicely penned, it was a pleasure...

Thanks a million Mr E! :)
You are a real Super Hero Mom ,Kathryn. This adorable poem gives away that secret. So real, tender, funny, loving, inspiring- "boogers" "messes" and all! Your imagination clearly matches theirs and helps them reach their highest heights. Loved this!

Thank you so much!
Boogers! You said boogers! *laughing*
This is what all mothers would aspire to be remembered as when their children are grown. And may every mother who reads it keep it in mind when too many boogers try to carry her across the line from Imagination Station to Psycho Mom. Good Job.
