Taste

Taste

A Poem by Kathryn Smith

You walk to the woods

Wade in the river to wander

And never stop to taste

The freedom you have

But look

Look around you

Today is the day

They crowd the sidewalks

Swarming on streets

Eyes on a parade

American flags in hands

See your mother?

Your father?

Acting like children

Excitement in their eyes

It warms your soul

Breaks your heart

Freeze Kathryn

Freeze it all

This won't last forever

One day they will be gone

These very people

In this tiny town

That you secretly loved

All along

And you will be holding

Another tiny hand

A child of your own

The years will grow

Can you taste it ?

Grasp it?

Feel it?

Touch it?

The burst of fireworks

The sparklers in your blood

This is it

The taste of your life

Ticking away

It's in the color of freedom

May pride never wash away

Democracy, liberty and freedom, indeed cause to celebrate and remember.... penned with genuine genealogy ...kudos!

This is excellent - combining love of country with love of parents...quite a feat. Good job.

Kathryn, your words has the power to capture the value and excitement of TODAY. While reading your poem I felt as if it also had a reference to 4th of July (American Independence Day). Is it so or just in my mind?

Well I am Good Kathryn :)
Hope you're doing well too.
Was a really powerful poem that raises a lot of questions. Why is it we get so excited over these things? Then... "This won't last forever, one day they will be gone" Bam, hit with a truth that rings in us all. Shows the cycle of citizens within this system, how it's a cycle, but it pushes deeper and asks if you can feel the change, the future, the past, pride... etc. Anyways good poem, thanks for sharing!
