Marry Me

Marry Me

A Story by Kathryn Smith

While sitting in the car, I asked my father this question:

"Do you think I'll ever get married dad?"

Without skipping a beat he said yes.

And then I asked:

"What kind of person do you think I'll marry?"

He replied:

"A good strong Catholic man."

He continued on about how it is what he hoped for me.

I tested the waters and was silently horrified and heartbroken watching him squirm as I mentioned:

Protestant men, Lutheran men, Baptist men, Jewish men, Atheist men, and oh the horror! Muslim men.

My stomach sank a little.

I want to make my father proud.

I've no idea who I'm going to fall in love with.

And I want to fall in love with whoever I want.

Whoever ends up with me is going to be one hell of a man anyways.

I want a man of empathy.

Of compassion and humor.

A man who knows how to look good.

Who can take control in the sheets.

A man who is humble but proud.

Kind and honest.

A man who is loyal.

Someone who challenges me and makes me into a better person.

I just want a man.

I'm not going to care what religion he is.

I just want to be loved.

I like the thoughts you express... but - always a but ya know... there ARE good men within EVERY belief system but YOU have to be willing to integrate COMPLETELY to the belief that will thereafter direct your life. Each choice reflects expectations, rules, and social and societal requirements. We don't choose whom we love - just whom we like. Be aware of what IS required - and what the requirements really mean now as well as later.

I like this quite a bit. Religion is given too much weight by too many people, it's become an antiquated measure of a person's morality. You're a good person.

Gee
My wife's father (Scottish) jokingly told her to never marry an Englishman or a Catholic, but most definitely not an English Catholic.
Well, she married an English atheist, and he died a happy man knowing that she had found a man that would Love her with his every fibre and treat her as he had.
A good, good man taken too early

Aw Gee. Sending you a hug! Glad he at least died happy. :)
God created people.. People created religion to fight one another . It's funny if you think about it. What matters is how much you are loved because in the end you will only take your good memories with you and nothing else

Thanks for stopping by to read!! What a lovely review too, thank you!
Oh, Lordy! I'm from the south and while there weren't a lot of restrictions on religion, my father had strong and wrong ideas on race.
"Whoever ends up with me is going to be one hell of a man anyways."
Good on you for already knowing that.
