The StruggleA Story by Kathryn SmithThe struggle you are up against makes you what you are You're young enough to say what you feel Here's how a typical eye check up for me goes: First, numbing eye drops are put in my eyes. And they sting. Next, I sit in the chair and press my forehead up against a machine. A machine with a small tube that will begin moving slowly towards my eye ball. The nurse holds my eyelid open and I am instructed to stare directly into the blue light on the tube moving towards me. I can't move a muscle. I have to breathe "normally" It comes closer. Closer. Closer. Closer. Until the tip of it touches my eye lens. What's it doing? It's measuring my eye pressure. Why? Because an airbag ripped out my eye lens, exploded my pupil, and gave me induced glaucoma. Glaucoma affects eye pressure, therefore it slowly makes you blind. After my eye pressure is taken, it's usually taken again. And again. Just to make sure the numbers are right. Next my left eye is dilated..but not my injured eye. My injured eye is permanently dilated. I read the eye chart. That usually goes well. Lastly, I get to have a field of vision test. This shows everyone how my eye is slowly wasting away or how it's holding up. Right. That's a normal eye check up for me. So as you can imagine, when my brother mocked me this morning, I looked him in the eye and told him exactly what was about to happen. One day he's going to have something traumatic happen to him. And on that day, maybe he'll have more respect. I hope he gets what he deserves. And that's a slap across the face. © 2017 Kathryn SmithAuthor's NoteReviews
