Dance with meA Story by Kathryn SmithLet my body do the work I was in Ireland around this time last year. And I'm trying to remember what I was doing day by day. One would think my memories would consist of castles, tours, food, or Guinness...but one of my favorite memories does not consist of that. There is a specific moment that stands out to me. Directly across the street from my hotel in Dublin, there was a tiny grocery store. Instead of spending large amounts of money in tourist traps, I saved my money by going to grocery stores. One night after a long day, I walked to the store. My friend had other ideas and I was hungry. The country was dealing with a heat wave at the time and the majority of the locals were miserable. I opened to the door and walked inside. It was quiet. Besides a fan running, you could hear a pin drop. A college student stood behind the counter with tired eyes. He looked bored to tears. In the front, next to the door stood a tall, dark, intimidating man in a suit and shades. He crossed his arms like most security guards do and watched people like a hawk. Emotionless. Shoppers quietly strolled around and put food into their carts. No smiles. No expressions. Just getting food. And then the music came on over the speakers. One of my favorite songs! I had to dance. I just had to. So I began to shake what my mama gave me. I didn't care what people thought. I was on vacation! This place needed to be livened up a bit. I danced down the aisles and pretended I was in a music video...
She shook her hips. And then a man started shopping along to the beat. He placed things in his bag at just the right moments. The security guard standing by the door cracked a smile. He even began nodding along. I skipped down the bread aisle with a few people dancing along behind me. For one moment in a small grocery store in Dublin, I created a dance party! As soon as the song ended everyone stopped and continued to shop like nothing happened. I still have a chuckle to myself about this memory. And I won't forget it! Thanks Dublin.
