For David

For David

A Story by Kathryn Smith

Your loneliness is only temporary it's true

And when you leave you don't have to take it with you

You can put all that behind you now...

It's been about a year since my good friend and I flew to Ireland.

I was to meet someone in Killarney;  a man who I had been wanting to see for a very long time. We became close and had written letters to one another for the past 2 years.

I met him, and very quickly learned that I flew across the ocean for someone who wouldn't jump a small puddle for me.

He wasn't the nicest person, and the situation was emotionally damaging.

I was devastated for most of the summer.

Fast-forward to August.

My family thought it would be fun to go to Irish Fest in Milwaukee.

I was unsure on going because I knew it might give me some unwanted memories, but I went anyways.

During the festival later that day, I was in a rush because I needed to meet my mother.

It was on my way to her when I heard some people singing in the distance.

Zig-zagging through the crowd, I got closer to the music.

And the very first words I could hear were the lyrics of Happiness. (Above)

Drawn in, I stopped in my tracks and listened carefully peering at the stage.

As your music unfolded, my heart felt hugged and greatly reassured.

I was able to fully step out of my skin of sadness for the first time.

The words of Happiness were words I had been needing to hear.

Even though I had to get going and only saw a glimpse of We Banjo 3, it was enough to leave a lasting impression.

David, I am thankful you are here! Finding you helped me find myself again.

Music works wonders! (Thank you also for visiting Stevens Point; that was my first show I got to see!)

I'll see you this summer!

Happy Birthday!
