Rules

A Chapter by Kathryn Smith

Dear Jack,

I've been thinking a lot about you lately.

I drive when I'm stressed out.

And today I drove to the cemetery to pay my friend a visit.

Greeting me, was a brand new sign erected near her grave.

It was enormous and made the cemetery look alienated..or held captive.

I got out of my car and slowly walked up to it, my boots sinking in the melting snow; I peered at it as if it were some kind of graffiti.

On the top it said

"Cemetery Rules."

I kept slowly reading.

"All flags/artificial pieces will be confiscated."

"Flowers must be rooted in the ground if not they will be confiscated."

"No food/drink permitted."

"No animals allowed."

"No miscellaneous decorations."

"The cemetery is closed from dawn to dusk."

Please take a brochure below for more information.

My eyes fell on a small black box. I opened it and found nothing.

My heart was ripped in two JJ.

I put fake flowers on her stone for her birthdays.

I placed paper cranes on the ground.

I even would bring packages of oreos and sat next to her eating them on

the day she left me.

And what did it mean the cemetery was closed dawn to dusk? That had to be a typo..

It makes no sense.

I hate that wretched sign.

Its enormous.

I hate that she's gone.

I HATE IT.

Jack what do I do?

Rebel and break the rules?

I think I will.

I hope you are safe.

I hope you are well.

I love you so much.

Your girl on earth,

Kathryn
