Danny Boy

Danny Boy

A Chapter by Kathryn Smith

Dear Jack,

I remember it so vividly.

So clearly.

In the darkness, my feet padded softly down the cool cement driveway.

Crickets chirped.

Lights in houses began to flick off.

The world whispered it's last goodnights.

And the warm sweet air kissed my face, as if greeting me; knowing me.

As usual, I was lost in the stars above.

It was summer..and I had just seen Ireland for the very first time.

I was home - and being back home hurt.

It was then, I was realizing how lucky I was.

Standing, looking at the night sky, with ear buds in my ears.. my music brought me life.

An instrumental version of Danny Boy began to play.

And at that moment, gazing at the twinkling lights -  My mind drifted to the men I learned about.

The men who died.

I wondered if they were watching me.

I wondered if they could hear me. If they could see me.

So my heart began to speak.

I began to pray.

If anyone from the Rising can hear me... if anyone at all is listening..

Will I ever go back? Someone please bring me back someday.....

And whoever guides me - give me a sign so I know who you are.

And that was that.

I'm a big believer in signs..

I studied more about the men who were executed..

Looking at their pictures..

I didn't know who to gravitate to..

But in the end it was you.

It was always you.

Thanks for bringing me back Mr. Heuston.

Even though some lessons in Ireland were terrible to go through - things happen for reasons.

I don't think it's just a coincidence I returned in May.

And I don't think it's a coincidence that it was the 100 year mark.

It was set in stone that night I was lost in the stars.

It was you who heard me.

It was you who decided to take my hand.

I hope you are safe.

I hope you are well.

I love you.

Your girl on earth
