Little EarsA Chapter by Kathryn SmithDear Jack, When you worked with Na Fianna - you worked with so many small children. You trained them. You taught them. You made them into good people for their country. Kind of like the Boy Scouts as I understand it... I am currently working with a small group of children. They are all in 1st grade and I love them so much. One boy I have grown rather fond of. He bounded in the room the other day proudly showing me his new Star Wars cap. Then he turned to me and said out of the clear blue: "I know an Irish word." I raised an eye brow and asked him what word. He shrugged his shoulders and said he couldn't remember. During class the children learned about trust. One by one they were blind folded and then were guided around the room by a partner. They begged to have me blindfolded and wanted to guide me around too. I of course let them. The girls went first - they did a marvelous job...and then the boys went. The other teacher at the end claimed that the girls did the best job guiding me. As she said this, I took off the scarf from my eyes. The first thing I saw, meeting my own eyes; were the saddest pair of blue eyes I had ever seen. My friend in his star wars hat was shattered. My heart sunk. I so wanted to tell him he did a great job too, but I never really got the time. I want him to have good memories of class Sean.. He already got worked up and upset over a test that these children should not even be taking. People seem to forget that..children are exactly what they are. Children Life goes quite fast and they need a chance to be as free as they can...while they still can. I should tell you though - (And I know you'd be proud of me) is that my goal by the end of the year is.. To teach my boy in the star wars hat an Irish word. I hope you are safe. I hope you are well. I love you so much. Your girl on earth - Kathryn
