A Chapter by Kathryn Smith

Dear Jack,

You were born on February 21st, 1891.

I was born on July 21st, 1992.

9 comes after 8.

2 comes after 1.

K comes after J.

I guess I'll always be right behind you, huh.

Tomorrow is January 21st - my half birthday!

It's hard to believe I am halfway through the age of 24.

Soon I will be the age you were when you died for

your country.

I remember being in Dublin last May and I saw your face on an enormous tapestry

on a building in the distance.

I looked all over for it- but could never find it again.

I wore a dress to Kilmainham.

And I walked through the jail feeling as if man's eyes were on me.

I found myself completely alone in the stonebreakers yard where they killed you.

All the tourists had gone. The tour guides had left.

I will never ever forget it JJ.

Standing alone upon those white stones.

The cross at my feet.

I cant describe what I felt.

But I knew you were there.

And boy...could I feel your strong and humble presence.

It was as if the hearts of the dead had never stopped beating.

And you stood with me.

Your hand on my shoulder.

After they had killed you in this yard, Father Albert said your face was completely lit up and peaceful.

And that he would have given anything to take your place.

I'm sure you didn't know 100 years after your death - there would be a girl out there who would care about you.

I hope you're safe.

I hope you're happy.

I love you!

Your girl on earth,

Kathryn
