Follow Me

Follow Me

A Chapter by Kathryn Smith

The daylight licked away the darkness, and as their trek went on, Solomon's drumming caught the attention of men, women, and children who were watching him from afar.

To Solomon's amusement a little girl and her brother began to follow.

The hopeful feet of children marched through small towns, Solomon and Jacob announced the birth of their King.

They spread the word and trumpeted and triumphed. They knocked on doors, they shouted through the night and encouraged the shepherds to follow.

The men and women of the villages could see that the mysterious and strange little boy's drumming was not in vain.

It was not for attention or to show off.

The drumming of Solomon was humble and joyful.

For such a small and lowly child, the drum made him appear to be larger than what he truly was.

Solomon drummed for his father, and mother.

He drummed for Jacob.

And he drummed for Samuel, his infant brother whom the guards slayed.

At dusk, Solomon noticed Jacob chuckling to himself.

"Why so happy Jacob?" He asked.

"Look behind you." Jacob said sheepishly.

Solomon peered behind him and couldn't believe his eyes.

In the distance, the little girl and her brother were joined by their families and friends.

And on the days and nights forward, the crowd of travelers grew larger.

The rich and the poor, the young, the old, the feeble and the strong, all began to follow.

Jacob could see so many emotions flow through Solomon's eye's. He wished he could capture this moment and take it back home with him.

On the night before their journey ended, Solomon began to sing.

Come they told me

Our newborn king to see

Our finest gifts we bring

To lay before the King

So to honor him

When we come
